It seems like more and more cities are sliding down this slippery slope. Especially here in Indiana. I think over time a few of these cities will be reborn. It will just be a factor of employment.

"One city displays fresh, raw wounds. The other the scars of slow bloodletting."

This is a compelling account. The New Orleans story is one of the anti-American dream: work hard, build a life for yourself and your family, and watch all of the plans that you made wash away. Then watch everyone sit on their hand and look at you while you struggle to make something happen.

The people rebuilding are taking a risk, but there is still lots of interest the city. The Saints just had their first football game in the Superdome, but they'll need a lot more support to make it work. I hope that the media light shines brightly enough that America won’t forget New Orleans and people will remain willing to help.

But what about Detroit? Flint? and other abandoned communities all over America? Whose fighting for them? For many it’s easier to just come of age and leave.

This is a wonderful and thought-provoking article. The comparison of two cities on the edge -- the edge of collapse? rebirth? the water? cultural life? -- is really compelling. Roads are often compared to arteries as rivers might have been before the twentieth-century changed the equations. The rough roads you encountered seem to relate to matters not only spatially but temporally as well. It will be a rough road for both cities as they move into the future.

I enjoyed reading your blog about New Orleans and Detriot. Okay, "enjoyed" is not the right word for I do find it kind of sad. I have learned some more about New Orleans from you. I have been to 9th ward and St. Bernard Parish. We will see what happen. I still haven't given up hope on New Orleans retaining its culture.
I found it illuminating to read your comparison of Detroit and New Orleans. But New Orleans is more likely to succeed simply because it is more "romantic". I know it sounds silly but I hope you understand. I fell in love with New Orleans, too. There is no other city like it.
